How would he advise any budding poets out there? ‘Read a lot of modern poetry,’ he said, ‘read as much poetry as you can.’ He recommended the Poetry Society as a useful source of information – and encouraged enthusiasts to join a local writers’ group. Roger obviously knows all about the challenge of finding your place in the poetry world. ‘Don’t be put off by what people tell you,’ he warned, ‘you’ll find your own voice. You’ve got to keep at it.’ But when all the accolades and awards have come and gone, there are some things in life worth more than medals and monuments.
