One evening I went home to relax after an intense day. Much to my astonishment, there was David Bowie – sitting in my lounge waiting for me! He’d talked his way past the porters and convinced them to open my flat with their passkey. He was always brimming with new ideas to share with me, as he needed assistance in getting them off the ground…Once Ziggy Stardust took off, I began to lose contact with Bowie. I recall ringing him shortly after he’d launched his new Ziggy image via a performance on BBC TV’s late-night rock show, The Old Grey Whistle Test. I’d noticed that a string on his guitar had broken, and as a guitarist myself asked him which one. ‘The G string, of course,’ he replied. That was a typical Bowie response.
