Rick Wakeman the Yes-man

South Harrow Baptist Church became the spiritual home for the five-year-old Wakeman, who says: ‘I was never forced to go to Sunday school – I actually loved it!’ He grew up through the various stages of congregational life – and even became a Sunday school teacher. ‘I never questioned the existence of God and what he could do,’ Wakeman says. ‘But by 1968 I was already at the Royal Academy of Music and playing in various bands.’ He absorbed rock ‘n’ roll – his heavy drinking became legendary – and felt a conflict between his new lifestyle and his upbringing. ‘I had no doubts – I wanted to give my life to the Lord. The difficulties were with the other things.’
