Mike McGoldrick: ‘Eric Clapton’ of the flute

Mike was born in 1971, just a few years before Manchester was to explode with punk bands like the Buzzcocks. But never mind them. The city continues to be a goldmine of music and media. Mike remarked on how the BBC’s new centre has changed the urban landscape. ‘Because my parents were Irish, I got involved with Irish music from a very early age,’ he explained about his background. ‘My father would play tunes on a tin whistle at home.’ Mike’s brother and two sisters grew up amid the sounds of The Bothy Band and Matt Molloy. ‘We were like sponges and just soaked up the music.’
