Bryn Haworth is the musician’s musician

It was an unusual setting to sing an old hymn. In the wee hours of a recording studio in Barbados, amid dope-smoking musos, Bryn Haworth played What A Friend We Have In Jesus on the guitar. He’d been doing some session work. The other players had shifted into relaxation mode, passing a guitar round and singing impromptu songs. ‘There were all these guys smoking spliffs,’ Bryn recalled (he didn’t indulge, of course!), ‘and I was singing, “What a friend we have in Jesus”. It was really interesting. The entire place went really quiet and this whole subject came up – we started talking about the cross and it was really powerful.’
